Catch up

So my original plan was to do a couple of quick posts to bring you up to speed with where we were with our veg and how we got to that point, however the last week of rain and sun have meant that we have started to harvest some of our earlier crops. As a consequence I will bring you up to speed in this post, with a look back at how we got there over the next few weeks.

Well the sun and heavy rain has brought the veg out in force, we have flowers on some of our broad bean plants, with some of the earlier plantings already with beans starting to show. The peas have sprouted and just need to fatten up.
We have already started thinning the carrots and have eaten some of the larger thinnings, they we quite tasty.
The onions are starting to fatten up, although the garlic looks a bit weedy, that may just be because it didn’t go in until Easter.
The salad crops are tasty too, we have almost finished the first spinach and rocket crop, so will be sowing the next batch very soon. The cur and come again lettuce alongwith the gems and continental selection seem to be coming of age now.
The tomato’s are now in their final locations, the smaller plants are in the hanging baskets and starting to flower. The peppers are about 8 inches tall now and starting to fatten up. The cucumbers and courgettes have sprouted half a dozen leaves and are shooting up in the air.
Our French and runner beans are both in their final spots, the runners are starting to flower, but the French beans are just starting to grow up now.
The potato’s both salad crop and main crop have really come on in leaps and bounds in the last week.
The spring onions and radishes are being harvested as they are coming up to size now.
Our pea shoots have been harvested and were lovely, we have put a second batch on which will come to fruition in a couple of weeks.
the rhubarb gave us a harvest earlier in the season, so we have left it to fatten the stalks up for the rest of the season.
On the fruit front, our blackcurrant has plenty of fruit which is starting to fatten up and should hopefully start to turn in the upcoming sun. The gooseberries were stolen by the birds earlier in the year before we covered it over in a net. The raspberry canes have plenty of raspberries on which should start to fatten this week.
Most exciting thing this week is some of the flowers on the lemon tree appear to have dropped off leaving tiny lemons to grow !!
